Alt-folk up-and-comers MUNROE share final taste of their upcoming EP with ‘FOR FIONA’,

Ahead of their upcoming EP SAID AND DONE set for release on September 10th, Naarm/Melbourne outfit MUNROE have today shared the final single from the project titled ‘FOR FIONA’; a bright, shimmering piece of melancholic alt-folk, drenched in Australiana.

‘For Fiona’, according to the band, is “a song about renewal, acceptance, and moving forward.”

Songwriter/vocalist Callum Riordan explains; “the song unfolds as a portrait of someone caught between healing and heartbreak, where the arrival of spring signals relief but not recovery. Surrounded by distinctly Australian imagery, the scent of jasmine, eucalyptus trees and vulnerable magpies, the narrator finds solace in the natural world while struggling to reconnect with people.” 

“Throughout the song, there is a sense that personal growth has come at a cost. Learning to speak honestly and express difficult truths appears to have alienated others, leaving the narrator questioning whether communication itself has driven a wedge between them and the person they miss. The tension between self-expression and isolation is reinforced through the recurring reference to Bob Dylan “plugging in”; a moment in music history synonymous with reinvention, controversy and the loneliness that can accompany change. “But who is Fiona?” the people will ask. Fiona is anyone and no one at all. A vessel to carry the emotional outcries of a narrator wanting to address everyone, someone, and no one at the same time.”

Recorded at Wick Studios and tracked live by the band, the song came together quite quickly and organically. Riordan says of the experience, “we’d been playing the song live for quite some time, so by the time it came to recording it felt so right. It’s nice tracking it all together to capture the energy, particularly in the outro. There’s this feeling of relief and resolution by the time the outro arrives, both intellectually via the lyrics, and dynamically playing the song as a band.”  The release of ‘For Fiona’ is accompanied by some stunning visuals, courtesy of Melbourne based director & editor William Forsyth.

‘For Fiona’ comes just ahead of their EP ‘Said And Done’ - 6 tracks including previously released singles ‘Happening Again’, ‘Spring’ & ‘My Time’. According to the band, ‘Said and Done’ is the combination of ‘six deeply personal songs, exploring heartbreak, memory, change and the lingering impact of the things we leave unsaid and finding meaning in the quiet moments that remain after everything is supposedly said and done. Rather than focusing on breakups, major decisions or defining moments themselves‘

Munroe have been bubbling away over the last few years, making a name for themselves within the Melbourne indie scene and beyond for their warm, endearing and emotionally charged performances. They’ve shared stages with the likes of Andy Golledge, John Floreani, Norwood & MT Nadir in their time; have appeared at festivals such as Queenscliff Music Festival; and have sold out multiple shows as a headline act in Melbourne, at venues such as The Gaso & Nighthawks. Their previous single ‘My Time’ received a first play on Unearthed, with airplay across triple j and ABC Country - as well as community stations such as SYN, RRR, 4ZZZ and more.
