Less than twelve months after dropping their ARIA-charting, self-titled debut album, Brisbane/Meanjin alt-rock favourites Worm Girlz today announce their upcoming EP In Loving Memory Of… with brooding new single, 'Broken Tooth'.
Inspired by the ghosts of hometowns and memories that refuse to dissipate, 'Broken Tooth' is a haunting reflection on the parts of ourselves left scattered in other people's lives. Filled with dark melodies, intimate lyrics and a dynamic instrumental palette that bears the full weight of the past, the track also explores the long-lasting effects of trauma and feeling stuck in the places it occurred.
As vocalists Lauren and Jade exchange verses, they grieve the fragments of themselves that are lost to time, while wondering if they’ve also become ghosts in someone else's memory.
“I always find it weird visiting my hometown, as it is a place that holds memories in every corner,” explains Jade. “I often wonder about the parts of myself I have left behind there and if the memory of me haunts people the way that they haunt me. This song is about that feeling, the images and history that places and your memory can hold even when people are gone.”
Serving as the second single from In Loving Memory Of…, 'Broken Tooth' offers a deeper glimpse into an EP consumed by haunted memories, grief, desire and betrayal. Following a love story that kills, Worm Girlz haunt their pasts, mourn the harmed, lean on loved ones, and return from the grave betrayed and disappointed.
As bassist Angie adds: “Through your life there’s always people that come and go, friends that fade out of existence, people wiped from your mind as if they never existed. ‘Broken Tooth’ is for the ones that you hope remember you forever; the ones you hope see glimpses of you on the street.”
