Genesis Owusu and And Beyond live at The Rechabite, Perth | 24 May 2026

The Rechabite was packed full of folks, who were clinging tightly to the front of stage to get up close and personal for the nights’ Hip Hop on show for that evening. With a motley crowd consisting of Gen Z goths, and ratchet fashionistas. Many older folks were there to balance out the youthful energy of the night. A testament to the magnetic pull of Genesis Owusu’s hip thrusty aura farming.
The first support act of the night was And Beyond. A local Perth hip-hop duo made up of brothers I’M THE PHANTOM and ZYTGYST. The heavy drum and bass element to their live set was deftly cheeky. The sampling was crisp, and upped the ante with their lyrics about pressing topics like privacy, and AI. Making you think profound thoughts like being on SBS insight, whilst your eardrums explode from the bass penetrating your ears from the speakers.

Physically, both of them were pretty charged. Jumping around, getting the punters to jump up and down too. Even roughhousing (who doesn’t love a good roughhouse) with each other later in the set. It was great to see local punters filling the slots of nationally touring shows once more, which they expressed gratitude for to adoring punters. One punter asked one of the duo cheekily if one of them was single. Seeing the trap card the punter had set down. They deflected with a simply ‘you’re not getting me into trouble’ reply. Sorry ladies, I think he is taken, and isn’t a ‘playa’.

Gensis Owusu, on the other hand, is an aphrodisiac placed into human form. There is something that man imbibes into his music that simply makes people get steamy. With many punters gyrating their hips, and swinging their booty in close proximity to the person next to them. At certain points, it was clear someone was going to get twerked on. The strobe lights also saw one punter enter into prophetic spasms, only confirming the power of Owusu’s spiritual energy coming from his music.
As the heat of the night built, this correlated with Owusu slowly taking more, and more of his clothes off. Like a slow cooked beef stew, or watching Magic Mike at the pace of a Finnish train video on SBS. The show really went hard at the start, getting the crowd flustered. To make room for the more beautiful moments later on.

With Owusu at one moment asking everyone to keel down. Walking to the middle of the stage and belting out to three stories of punters above him, in a flurry of mobile phone torches, it captured the awe and mesmerisation of a stadium show. Condensed into a medium-sized venue. Creating an almost biblical scene live, as Owusu stood in the middle of hundreds of kneeling fans circling him and worshiping his performing emphatically.
Love had to be given to Owusu’s backing band, who were the engine behind his roaringly, soulful sound. With the crowd loudly stomping through ‘Get Inspired’ (yes, that deliciously crispy KFC song), the night finished off with heartfelt ballad ‘A Song About Fishing’. With punters swaying dolefully with love for Owusu, and his ecstatic sound.
